Faculty, staff, family and friends gathered Wednesday, April 17, in the NEW Center Grand Ballroom to celebrate the success of 19 upcoming 2019 graduates of the College of Pharmacy and seven alumni of the Class of 2018 who have been selected for pharmacy residencies. All 19 of the 2019 graduates will complete their residencies in the state of Ohio.
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Resident Matching Program (the “Match”) places applicants into pharmacy residency training positions in the United States. The Match includes both postgraduate year one (PGY1) and postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residencies.
Practicing at the top of their license
Residencies are optional for pharmacists, so choosing and being selected to pursue one for a year, or for a second year, represents a high level of ambition and achievement. Out of the 5,900 who participated in the national pool this year, only 64% obtained residencies.
These NEOMED students “will act as change agents,” said Seth Brownlee, Pharm.D., associate professor of pharmacy practice. Mentioning that this was his first time at the ceremony in his new role of senior associate dean of program quality and student success, Brownlee choked up momentarily as he recognized former colleague Timothy Ulbrich, Pharm. D., for his work with the students.

President Gershen congratulated the students, as did College of Pharmacy Dean Richard Kasmer, Pharm.D., J.D., and Jaclyn Boyle (’12), Pharm. D., M.B.A., who has returned in a new role as assistant dean for student success and assistant professor of pharmacy practice. As students processed one at a time to the front of the Ballroom to be recognized, some student videos were shown, including one from Laura Nice (’18), who will soon begin a second year of residency in oncology at University of Louisville Health Care.
Wishing the new crop of residents the best of luck, Nice encouraged them: “It’s gonna go great!”
