AHEC Scholars Discuss Bedside Manner During End-of-Life Care

Scholars from the Area Health Education Center’s AHEC Scholars Program engaged in difficult conversation in a discussion titled “Bedside Manners and End-of-Life Care” earlier this week.

Margaret (Margy) Sanders, director for the Office of Palliative Care and Associate Director for the Office of Geriatrics at NEOMED, discussed with the students the importance of palliative care, the interprofessional teams who work in hospice settings and the barriers to psychosocial and spiritual support services. The Zoom session was part of a larger “Hot Topics” series sponsored each fall and spring by the AHEC Program Office at NEOMED.

Hot Topics aims to prepare health professions students to engage in difficult conversations and think critically from multiple perspectives.

The AHEC Scholars Program consists of 40 hours of community experience and 40 hours of didactic learning over the course of two years. The scholars are undergraduate students from area universities, including University of Akron, Youngstown State University, Kent State University and Cleveland State University.
