Applications being accepted for first Igel Research Award
The College of Medicine has announced a new opportunity for COM faculty to apply for the first annual Igel Research Award. This award honors Dr. Howard Igel, first chair of the NEOMED department of pathology. Up to $50,000 will be available to support innovative research that offers the promise of impact on human disease by a COM faculty member. Applicants should submit a 5-page proposal for a one-year project, an NIH bio sketch, and a budget and budget justification by March 31, 2026. The proposal should contain the following sections:
- Specific aims
- Background and significance (including relevant preliminary data)
- Research plan
- Explanation of how this work will be continued after completion of the one-year project, including possibilities for further extramural funding
Proposals will be judged based on novelty, feasibility, likely impact and promise of future funding.
To submit proposals, please email them to Jennifer Lint, Director of Communications and Administration, at jlint@neomed.edu by March 31, 2026. Please include “Igel Research Award” in the subject line. Questions about the award or proposal should be directed to Marc Basson, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., Dean of the College of Medicine at mbasson@neomed.edu.
The award will be announced in June 2026 and become available to the applicant in July 2026. On a day during that time, we will expect that the awardee will receive the award itself at a ceremony during which the awardee will be asked to offer a five-minute presentation describing their project for a lay audience. In the following year, we will ask the awardee to present a full scientific seminar describing the work done with the award and future directions, and then to attend the ceremony for the following year’s awardee.
