Chair of Emergency Medicine recognized for mentorship

Congratulations to Nicholas Jouriles, M.D., professor and chair of Emergency Medicine at NEOMED, who was recognized with the Mentor Award from the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM). The award, presented during the SAEM annual meeting May 13-16 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, spotlights individuals who thrive in their academic careers in emergency medicine and have mentored others to become leaders the field.

Dr. Jouriles also serves as vice chair of faculty development for Summa Health.

In nominating Dr. Jouriles for the SAEM award, Michael Pallaci, D.O., professor of Emergency Medicine at NEOMED and vice chair for faculty and resident development at Summa Health, noted, “What makes him such an amazing mentor is that he is an amazing human. I've never seen someone so revered and admired yet so humble. Someone who has accomplished so much and has helped others accomplish so much while deflecting all the credit.”

Among the nearly 70 mentees who endorsed the nomination was Erin Simon, D.O., professor of Emergency Medicine at NEOMED and vice chair of research in emergency services for the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Simon shared, “His belief in my potential has inspired me to strive for excellence, and his guidance continues to resonate in my clinical practice and research endeavors. I am incredibly grateful for his lasting impact on my career."

Recent NEOMED graduate Rahi Patel, M.D. (’25), who will begin residency in emergency medicine at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, said, “He took so much time out of his schedule to help me with my application, personal statement, and guiding me through applying this year. He loves the field so much and is eager to help students that want to pursue [emergency medicine].”

Congratulations, Dr. Jouriles!
