COM Student Affairs expansion and Career Advising Roadmap

Under the direction of Corrie Stofcho, M.D., assistant dean of students, and coordinated by Harmony Stanger, M.B.A., director of student affairs, the College of Medicine is proud to announce an expansion of the career advising team within Student Affairs to include two new academic & career advisors - Kimberly Younger, M.Ed. and Carla Mattiussi, Ed.S.

The main focus of their roles is to provide scheduled and consistent feedback and guidance in appointments with students during fall and spring semesters. Holistic advising will include monitoring academic progress, defining career preparation, overseeing the ERAS application process and assisting with Match.

To assure student success, a Career Preparation Road Map was designed to include checklists for every meeting alongside deadline dates to ensure all students are receiving pertinent information, as well as allowing for individual questions to address any particular needs. The intent of the roadmap is to collaborate with students by aiding in forward progression, enrichment activities and career advising.

Iris Mirelez, M.Ed., has been elevated to director of student support & enrichment, and is now joined by William Demas, M.D., assistant dean of student support & enrichment. The goal of this division of Student Affairs is to engage students in efforts that reach beyond traditional services, such as support as interest groups advisors, additional tutoring, and professional and personal development, etc.

Ms. Mirelez and Ms. Stanger will also be the primary career advisors for a subset of students and Dr. Stofcho remains available to meet with any student who may have additional questions or concerns.

Student Affairs is led by Douglas Moses, M.D., who remains associate dean for admissions and student affairs, and office manager Whitney Vaughn, our student affairs coordinator, both of whom proudly represent the group administratively as they strive to assist with student success.
