Dr. Harris-Haywood will be next dean of medical school at Meharry

Dear NEOMED Community:

After 10 years at NEOMED, Sonja Harris-Haywood, M.D., has accepted a new opportunity — as dean of the School of Medicine at Meharry Medical College.

Dr. Harris-Haywood has served as associate dean of curriculum in NEOMED’s College of Medicine where she oversaw the development of curricular content and integration for the pre-clerkship curriculum. She also provided student success and advising for underrepresented students in the Urban and Social Justice Pathways.

Prior to that role, Dr. Harris-Haywood served as the senior associate dean of NEOMED’s urban health pathway with CSU.

Having first joined NEOMED in 2013 as co-director of the original NEOMED/CSU Partnership for Urban Health, Dr. Harris-Haywood has been a key contributor to the growth of the College of Medicine’s student diversity.

A valued educator and trusted adviser to our students, Dr. Harris-Haywood also served as associate professor in both the Departments of Family and Community Medicine and Integrative Medical Sciences.

Dr. Harris-Haywood’s decade of great work at NEOMED has been grounded in her life’s work, which she often says is “always about ensuring that students are successful.”

Please join me in thanking her for her service to NEOMED and wishing her well.

Her last official day is July 31.

Sincerely,

John T. Langell
President
