Finding solutions to workforce shortages and safety

Northeast Ohio Medical University and University Hospitals Ventures co-hosted the second annual Healthcare Transformation IDEATOR on April 17-18. Hosted at Bounce Innovation Hub in Akron, the exclusive two-day competition challenged participants on five teams with developing innovative solutions to pressing concerns in health care systems such as workforce shortages, gun violence and caregiver safety.

The first-place team, Butler Rx, proposed a software platform with options for different categories of patient care needs. Through an app on their mobile device, hospital patients would be able to request specific assistance which would trigger automated delivery of notifications to appropriate staff based on clinical versus nonclinical needs.  The team included third-year pharmacy student Cynthia Deokarran and Brian Zahn, senior programmer analyst at NEOMED, along with Elyse Mulligan, Dr. Nathaniel McQuay and Tracey Plank from University Hospitals. Each member of the team receives a $500 prize.

Taking second place was the team, Code Well-Being, comprised of Elizabeth Backus, operational excellence analyst, and Lisa Tavallali, senior practice administrator for NEOMED Health Care, along with Stacy Smith, Deborah Prusak and Sara O’Brien from UH. Noting the high prevalence of violence against hospital caregivers and resulting burnout and turnover, the team proposed a solution using existing technology to improve reporting and follow-up on incidents of violence against caregivers. Each member of the team receives a $250 prize.

Each of the winning teams will receive $5,000 to pursue coaching as they further develop their innovations.

Staff members Calvin Muller and Jordan Walker, pharmacy student Derick Shull and graduate students Rami Moussa, Quintaris Earl and Varun Raja also participated in the competition.

Congratulations to the winning teams!
