First- and second-place honors for Ignite Magazine
Ignite magazine earned four awards at the Press Club of Cleveland’s 2023 All Ohio Excellence in Journalism contest award ceremony, held June 2 in Cleveland.
The All Ohio Excellence in Journalism contest is open to print and digital newspapers, magazines, television and radio throughout the State of Ohio. This year’s contest evaluated entries from the calendar year 2022, which included the Spring 2022 and Fall 2022 issues of Ignite, NEOMED’s semi-annual human interest magazine.
The publication earned the following awards:
First Place / Best in Ohio – Illustration, All Publications was awarded to Ignite and illustrator David Szalay, a member of the art faculty at the University of Akron, for illustrations accompanying a series of profiles on transformational leaders.
First Place / Medical and Health Writing was awarded to Jeanne Hoban, director of publications and communication and editor of Ignite, for “Rediscovering Capacity and Purpose,” a feature story on the resiliency retreats and research of Margy Sanders, M.A., LSW, associate professor of family and community medicine.
Second Place / Education Writing (Higher Education) was awarded to Hoban for “What’s in Your Backpack,” a profile of NEOMED’s Wilderness Medicine student group.
Second Place / Multicultural Writing was awarded to Sebastían Díaz, Ph.D., J.D., associate dean for Quality Initiatives in the College of Medicine, for a reflection, titled “Our Culture, Our Community: Cuba.”
