Free training for students: Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk

The need for assessment of suicide risk can occur in any health care setting. NEOMED students have a unique opportunity to improve their skills as future health professionals and benefit their future patients during a day-long training hosted by the NEOMED Student-Run Free Clinic.

The training, Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk (AMSR), is Saturday, Sept. 30, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. During the eight-hour training session, students will learn about the latest suicide risk assessment and risk formulation that can be used in a variety of care settings.

AMSR teaches a prevention-oriented risk formulation that is designed to create safer care practices in suicide prevention. This framework allows health professionals to meet each person as an individual and treat them according to what they need. The training yields a better collaborative environment and improved safety planning.

The program is free to NEOMED students, but registration is limited to 30 students! Priority will be given to students who are connected with the free clinic.

The program is funded through a behavioral health grant from CVS Pharmacy NAFC (National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics). Similar training opportunities cost $145-$170 per person.

Instructor Ashley Loucek, LPCC-S, is behavioral health coordinator for the Student-Run Free Clinic. She has over 12 years of experience in emergency behavioral health. In addition to the clinic, she teaches an M4 behavioral health elective and works at Coleman Health Services as an emergency pre-screener. She is also the current coordinator for Portage County LOSS (Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors) Team.
