From aspiring to achieving: My journey as a doctor-in-training with AHEC Scholars

Abigail Beaver is a fourth-year medical student at NEOMED. She’s also a past participant in the pipeline opportunities that the Area Health Education Center provided through the AHEC Scholars Program and stays involved with AHEC through MEDCAMP.

She shared:

"Becoming a doctor has been a lifelong goal of mine for as long as I can remember, and it is hard to believe that I am in my last year of medical school. I am confident that being a member of the AHEC Scholars Program while at Youngstown State University provided me with unique opportunities that enhanced my medical education and ultimately helped shape who I am going to be as a doctor. As an AHEC scholar, I gained interprofessional skills that are necessary to participate in patient centered holistic health care. Additionally, since I matriculated to NEOMED, I have been able to stay involved with AHEC by being a mentor for MEDCAMP and volunteering at various functions for current scholars. Having the chance to continue to periodically assist with the program is so fulfilling because I remember those who influenced my life prior to medical school, and I hope to have the same impact. Regardless of which path a scholar pursues in health care; it is too challenging to do alone. I have personally experienced the support the program provides during times of uncertainty, and I will be forever grateful for that. Even though my time as a scholar is over, I will always cherish the meaningful relationships I have built and will continue to use what I was taught."
