Get to know Avery Miller

As an intern in the Office of Marketing and Communications, Bio-Med senior Avery Miller will likely cross paths with individuals from throughout NEOMED, so we’re giving you a chance to get to know her. She shared a little about herself with The Pulse.

Where are you from?

I’ve lived in many cities throughout Northeast Ohio but I eventually settled in Akron.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I don’t have too much free time; I spend a lot of time watching my siblings. When I get to do something for myself, I enjoy reading, writing and watching TV.

Last show you binge-watched?

I am currently binge-watching Suits. I’m a little over halfway through so far and I really enjoy all the characters. My favorite character would have to be Donna.

What’s your favorite book?

I read a lot, so picking one favorite is a bit difficult. My top three would have to be Midnight Library by Matt Haig, The Cheerleaders by Kara Thomas and They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera.

If you could turn into an animal, what would it be?

I don’t know much about animals but I think I would choose a cat. I could curl up and nap all day or lay in front of a window to enjoy the sun.

What do you enjoy most about being a Bio-Med student?

I enjoy the people the most. Bio-Med has students from all over the place. Some students even drive a little over an hour to school every day and I know I would’ve never gotten the chance to meet these people if I had gone to my local public school – which would’ve been a shame because I’ve met people in Bio-Med that have changed my life for the better.

What drew you to Bio-Med?

Two main things really interested me in Bio-Med, the academics and the size. Bio-Med’s programs and academics seemed challenging in the best way, and I decided they would be a better fit for me. I probably wouldn’t end up bored. The number of students at Bio-Med was particularly attractive to me since I went to a small private school from kindergarten to eighth grade. I wasn’t excited at the idea of going to the high school near me and being overwhelmed with the amount of students in my grade.

What is the most interesting connection between Bio-Med and NEOMED?

I think the most interesting has to be the actual proximity of the schools. Not many people can say that they attended high school somewhere on a college campus.

What about that dream job?

My dream job would be to own and run my own bookshop. Unfortunately, today, so many people read their books digitally. Not nearly as many people are interested in walking around a bookshop for hours, looking over the backs of books for an interesting story or carrying around as many books as they can fit in their arms until it’s decided which ones they’re going to reluctantly place back on the shelf. People would rather scroll through pretty covers online and click a button or two before they have it downloaded to their device, which is a shame because reading a paper book is just so different in the best way. Reading digital copies makes earning enough money to live comfortably from a bookstore nearly impossible.
