Get to Know Kami Green
Kami Greene recently joined the NEOMED community as the University’s director of accounting and controller. She sat down with The Pulse to discuss her background and some of her favorite things to do outside of work.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Columbiana, Ohio, and currently reside there with my husband, our two children and our golden retriever.
What made you want to become part of the NEOMED community?
Most of my career has been in higher education. I worked in the Controller’s Office at Youngstown State University (YSU) as a senior financial analyst and then worked at Geneva College as the controller. NEOMED has allowed me to bring my accounting experiences from a state university and a not-for profit college together to oversee the accounting functions at NEOMED for the University and its affiliated not-for-profit entities. I am excited to be a part of a university that is growing and advancing as it serves the students and medical community of Northeast Ohio. There are a lot of exciting things happening at NEOMED and everyone has been extremely welcoming and helpful!
What are your primary responsibilities as director of accounting and controller?
I oversee all the accounting functions for the University, the Foundation, and the affiliated companies of NEOMED. Our office is responsible for the annual audit and financial statements, taxes (990, W2, 1099, etc.), and many other financial reporting requirements. The Accounting Office is also responsible for the functions of payroll, accounts receivable/payable, purchasing and bursar.
What made you want to get into this field?
Math was always my favorite subject, and I was interested in business, so accounting seemed like a good fit. As an undergraduate student at YSU, I worked in the Controller’s Office. After a short stint in public accounting, using my accounting knowledge and experience in a university setting was a natural fit. Although I rarely work directly with students, it is exciting to be a part of a college campus.
Where are some of your favorite places to spend free time in Northeast Ohio?
Most of my free time is spent watching my children play sports at local baseball/softball/soccer fields and basketball courts. When we’re not at a youth sporting event, we enjoy visiting restaurants in our hometown such as Homestead Kitchen, Belleria and Sabi’s. We enjoy spending time at Firestone Park and Mill Creek Park. Our family also enjoys attending Scrappers baseball games in the summer.
What is your favorite movie, and why is it your favorite?
One of my favorite movies is The Sandlot. It is a movie that I first watched as a teenager when I was babysitting and have enjoyed watching it with my own children. I love the classic themes of friendship and baseball. It is relatable because it reminds me of summers growing up where we played outside all summer with our neighborhood friends.
