Get to Know: NEOMED (week of July 27)
We probably all know someone like this: You say good morning when you pass in the hall, you chat while waiting for your coffee order and you see them at University events and programs. But you don’t really know who they are or what they do at NEOMED.
We’re here to help with the new feature, “Get to know NEOMED”! Each week we’ll share brief profiles of some new faces and some long-time staff.
This week we feature Lisa Cooper, Ph.D., and Diana Dillon and Jessica Ferrell, Ph.D.
Lisa Cooper, Ph.D.
What is your role here at NEOMED?
I am a researcher and a teacher.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love science, exploration, and helping others understand the complexities of life.
What is a fun fact about yourself?
I love water (swimming, water-skiing, scuba diving, body surfing, learning about life in the water, and watching sunsets over the water)!

What is your role here at NEOMED?
Marketing & Communications Coordinator
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Other than working with an exceptionally talented team, what I enjoy most is the opportunity to collaborate with people across the entire University. In Marketing & Communications, I have the privilege of working with everyone—from students and faculty to senior leadership. Every day is different, and it's rewarding to help tell NEOMED's story while supporting the important work taking place across campus, throughout Ohio, and beyond.
What is a fun fact about yourself?
After 23 years at NEOMED, it's become a family affair for us. My daughter, Katelin, has worked at NEOMED for nearly 10 years, and my son-in-law, Nik, is a proud NEOMED graduate. As an added bonus, they live next door, so I get to spend lots of quality time with my two little grandsons!
Jessica Ferrell, Ph.D.
What is your role here at NEOMED?
I first started at NEOMED as a postdoctoral fellow in 2011, then transitioned to Research Assistant Professor in 2015 and Assistant Professor in 2022. I teach in the College of Medicine, the College of Graduate Studies, and the Bitonte College of Dentistry. I also research metabolic and alcohol-associated liver disease.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I've really enjoyed my role as Course Director for Foundations of Medicine, which is the first course our M1 students take. I'm honored to be one of the first faculty members that students interact with, and that I have the opportunity to help everyone start off strong.
What is a fun fact about yourself?
As of a few weeks ago, I started trying to learn Mandarin. I'm armed with the Lingo Legend app, flashcards, and some HSK1 books, but it's a slow process!
