Holi: A Celebration of Spring and Renewed Gatherings

Clouds of colorful powder filled the air near The Village apartments on NEOMED’s campus on April 10 as students gathered to celebrate Holi, a centuries-old Hindu tradition that marks the arrival of spring and celebrates love and the triumph of good over evil.
While the Hindu festival of colors originated in South Asia, it has now spread worldwide, with Holi events taking place globally. People across the world celebrate Holi by throwing colorful powder into the air and splashing each other with it. There’s significance behind every hue. The paints in reds, greens, yellows and blues represent love, rebirth and new beginnings, natural remedies and the Hindu god, Krishna.
Events like Holi are a great way to start conversations and break down stereotypes about different cultures, beliefs and people. The celebration was organized by the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, which has plans for events in the future to share more from their culture, such as Diwali and Bollywood trivia nights.
