Igel Research Award: COM faculty applications now open
The College of Medicine is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the annual Igel Research Award.
All College of Medicine faculty are welcome to apply. The award honors Dr. Howard Igel, the inaugural chair of NEOMED’s Department of Pathology.
This award will provide up to $50,000 to support innovative research that offers the promise of impact on human disease by a College of Medicine faculty member.
Applicants should submit a 5-page proposal for a one-year project, in addition to an NIH bio-sketch, and a budget and budget justification by Jan. 31, 2027.
The proposal should contain the following sections:
- Specific aims
- Background and significance (including relevant preliminary data)
- Research plan
- Explanation of how this work will be continued after completion of the one-year project, including possibilities for further extramural funding.
The budget should not include faculty salaries, which will be covered by the College of Medicine out of the 40% effort protected for research for each faculty member.
Proposals will be judged on the basis of novelty, feasibility, likely impact and promise of future funding. The award will be announced in June 2027 and become available to the applicant in July of 2027. On a day during that time period, the awardee will be expected to present a professional seminar describing their work so far and plans, and then receive the award itself at a ceremony during which the awardee will be asked to offer a five-minute presentation describing their project for a lay audience.
Please submit applications to aconner@neomed.edu as a single pdf document.
