Ignite magazine earned seven awards at the Press Club of Cleveland’s 2022 All Ohio Excellence in Journalism contest award ceremony, held June 10 in Cleveland.
The All Ohio Excellence in Journalism contest is open to print and digital newspapers, magazines, television and radio throughout the state of Ohio. This year’s contest evaluated entries from the calendar year 2021, which included the Spring 2021 and Fall 2021 issues of Ignite, our semi-annual human interest magazine.
The publication earned three awards in Best in Ohio categories:
- Second place in the Best Trade Publication in Ohio category was awarded to Elaine Guregian (right), who is retiring as Ignite editor, Roderick L. Ingram, Sr., chief marketing officer and graphic designer Scott Rutan.
- First place in the Best in Ohio: Illustration All Publications category was awarded to freelance artists and Guregian for artwork in both eligible issues of Ignite.
- Second place in the Best in Ohio: Headline Writing category was award to Guregian and Ingram.
The magazine also garnered four awards in the Trade Publication section.
Guregian took home a first-place award in the Features: Personality Profile category for “Forging Futures: Mary Massie-Story.” The judges enthused, “Poetic prose elevates this beyond the everyday. Absolutely inspiring.”
Roderick L. Ingram Sr., chief marketing officer, also earned a first-place award in the Trade Report category for “Good Trouble in Rootstown.” According to the judges, “Great writing makes this compelling and engaging.”
The first-place award for Visuals: Illustration Single Image went to the image illustrating “Social Media for Psychiatrists,” which appeared in the Spring 2021 issue of Ignite. The illustration was created by freelance illustrator Branden Vondrak.
A second-place award in the Covers: Trade and Professional Publications category went to an image of the COVID-19 virus on the cover of the Fall 2021 issue. The illustration is by Dave Szalay, a professor at the University of Akron Myers School of Art and frequent Ignite contributor.
