In the Media: Jessica Ferrell, Ph.D. on HCPLive
Jessica Ferrell, Ph.D., assistant professor of integrative medical sciences, spoke to HCPLive on the role of bile acid sensors in treating cholestatic and metabolic liver disease.
Dr. Ferrell presented on the topic at The Liver Meeting 2023 from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD). She addressed how bile acids and bile acid receptors are currently being examined as treatment for metabolic disease, MASLD, MASH and alcohol-associated diseases in clinical trials.
In the article, Dr. Ferrell noted the biggest hope is to address MASLD and target those bile acids and bile acid receptors at a reversible stage of the disease to help prevent irreversible liver disease. Additionally, since bile acids can exhibit anti-inflammatory effects and beneficial effects in the brain, she anticipates research into how the use of bile acids and bile acid receptors can treat neurological disease.
