In the News: Evolution of Whale Brains

Northeast Ohio is home to many higher education institutions furthering education through research. Crain’s Cleveland Business recently showcased ongoing projects from throughout the area, including research at NEOMED on the evolution of whale brains. Whales have the largest brains on the planet and their evolution is of interest because it mirrors that of primates.

The National Science Foundation-funded labs of Lisa Cooper, Ph.D., and Hans Thewissen, Ph.D., are studying this evolution, which examines whale fossils from India and Pakistan and modern whales caught by indigenous Alaskans, in collaboration with NEOMED neurobiologist Matthew Smith, Ph.D., and Bridget Mulvey, Ph.D., of Kent State University.
