'Just Joking' campaign raises awareness of gun violence
Sandy Hook Promise is a national nonprofit founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, 2012. Based in Newtown, Connecticut, their intent is to honor all victims of gun violence by turning their tragedy into a moment of transformation. By empowering youth to “know the signs” and uniting all people who value the protection of children, we can take meaningful actions in schools, homes, and communities to prevent gun violence and stop the tragic loss of life.
Sandy Hook Promise’s public service announcement campaigns raise awareness of the warning signs that can lead to school shootings, youth violence and other harmful acts. In the new “Just Joking” campaign, prominent comedians voice actual school shooting threats from the comedy stage as if they were jokes.
As shown by the celebrities voicing these “jokes,” we must take all threats seriously and take action when there are warning signs of violence.
How to alert campus officials to suspected threats:
- For immediate threats/emergencies: contact the NEOMED police directly by calling 911
- The Care Team Referral form is a resource to communicate a concern about an emerging situation involving an individual student, faculty, staff or guest’s behavior that is causing concern about the safety of that individual and/or others but has not escalated to an emergency.
