Kinetic energizes local entrepreneurs
Kinetic, a joint venture between NEOMED and Bounce Innovation Hub to support the commercialization and development of new medical technologies, was formed in 2023. Since then, the organization has helped 38 different companies create 82 patents, while being awarded over $28 million in funding.
It all starts with an idea. But how do you make it come to life?
“Creating new medical technology can be a major challenge to navigate,” said Jordan Walker, entrepreneurial program specialist for the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at NEOMED. “It has been rewarding to watch so many entrepreneurs become empowered through partnerships. There have been many cases where the road to commercialization has been made possible through access to lab space, expertise of others, and even legal or marketing services they would not have had otherwise.”
Many entrepreneurs are getting access to services right on the NEOMED campus, whether it be the office and wet lab space in the REDIzone, creating prototypes in the Timken Foundation Medical Design Innovation Center (MEDIC), or using state-of-the-art equipment necessary for preclinical drug and device studies in the Comparative Medicine Unit. The partnership with Bounce creates additional opportunities, like mentorship from an entrepreneur-in-residence, entrepreneurial workshops and events, and community engagement opportunities.
“There is massive opportunity for commercialization with the evolving nature of health care,” said Walker. “It’s an exciting time where we can help others turn ideas into reality that can potentially improve the health of millions of people.”
