The Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA) hosted a Lunar New Year Celebration on Monday, Jan. 23 in the lobby outside of Watanakunakorn Auditorium. With over 100 students and faculty attending the event, the new year was certainly celebrated in style!
In Asia, Lunar New Year is often called the Spring Festival and is one of the most important holidays of the year, marking the beginning of a new year in the Chinese calendar, which is a lunisolar calendar determined by the moon and the sun. This holiday is often a two-week celebration occurring between January 21 and February 20 to spend with family and friends.
Common festivities include feasts, firecrackers, parties, parades and a lantern festival. During NEOMED’s Lunar New Year celebration, attendees were able to enjoy a variety of Asian cuisines including crab rangoons, shiitake mushroom dumplings, pork potstickers, vegetarian egg rolls, mapu tofu, thit kho, Japanese vegan curry and fa gao. In addition, gift bags filled with various Asian snacks and candies were passed out along with bubble tea from Ming’s Bubble Tea. The event was free but donations were made by attendees to support Asia Services in Action (ASIA Inc.), a health and human services agency serving the AAPI community of Northeast Ohio.
Thank you to everyone who attended, Happy Lunar New Year!
