Medical student shares research insights in podcast
Third-year medical student Warren Cheng recently shared findings from a case of catatonia following abrupt discontinuation of clozapine on a podcast of The Primary Care Companion. The case was reported in an article Cheng co-authored with psychiatrists from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Dartmouth University and Massachusetts General Hospital. Cheng became involved in the project through co-author Patrick Ho, M.D., M.P.H., who is a 2015 graduate of the NEOMED College of Medicine.
The case involved a 42-year-old man with schizoaffective disorder who was switching from one antipsychotic medication (Clozapine) to another (Cobenfy, or xanomeline-trospium chloride), and abruptly ended taking Clozapine.
In the podcast, Cheng hypothesized that the abrupt discontinuation of Clozepine may have led to overstimulation of certain muscarinic receptors, which led to catatonia.
