Medicine students present at ACH grand rounds

College of Medicine students Emily Arellano (M3) and Anthony Baumann (M4) recently presented a poster titled “Physical Therapy Utilization after ACLR at a Single Pediatric Institution” at the Akron Children's Hospital (ACH) Resident and Fellows Academic Day. Their abstract was among four selected to be presented during ACH grand rounds.

Their project looked at physical therapy use after ACL reconstruction in pediatric patients at ACH. The retrospective analysis found a significant difference in PT use between a return-to-sports group and the non-sports group.

In the poster, the students suggested that evaluating the reasons patients discontinue physical therapy may increase compliance during the long post-operative period. They also suggested future research should examine discontinuation of PT as a risk factor for re-injury following ACL reconstruction.
