Meet Deanna Laughlin

As the Northeast Ohio Medical University Class of 2027 starts their journey, we wanted to learn more about students from this incoming group.

We invited them to share their stories. Here is one response:

Meet Deanna Laughlin, who begins her first year in the College of Pharmacy.

Hometown: Ashtabula, Ohio

Previous Institution: California University of Pennsylvania, Dual M.B.A.

Q: Why did you choose NEOMED?

A: I chose NEOMED because I wanted to find a pharmacy program and a translational medicine program with the opportunities of leadership. Having these opportunities allows me to continue toward my goals of a residency or pharmaceutical research.

Q: What specific career do you hope to pursue? What inspired your choice?

I hope to have a career in research as an infectious disease pharmacist working with bacteriophages for transplant patients. I chose this field because I love microbiology and the growing field of bacteriophage therapies.

Q: When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A: When I was little, I wanted to be a scientist.

Q: What do you do better than anyone you know?

A: Organization and strategic planning.

Q: What book or movie are you currently recommending to friends?

A: Re-imagining Capitalism in a World on Fire by Rebecca Henderson

Q: You are handed a plane ticket to anywhere in the world. Where are you going? Why?

A: I would choose to go to Madagascar. I want to go there because of the biodiversity, and I would love to experience the ecosystem there through hiking and camping.

Q: If time and resources were no object, what skill or hobby would you pursue? Why?

A: I would love to build a farm and live off the land. Gardening has always been something that I have enjoyed, and I would love to grow my skills to have a large garden, farm animals and an exotic flower garden.

Q: What’s your hype song? Why?

A: High Hopes by Panic! At the Disco – I’m always manifesting my future goals, and some say that they can be a tad out of reach. This song reminds me that I may want everything but if I persist, I will achieve my goals.

Q: What’s one thing you believe everyone should try at least once?

A: Experience something out of your comfort zone. Try something brand new and to experience learning it with others is an amazing feeling of community.

Q: What would people be surprised to know about you?

A: I played collegiate softball and I’m a certified personal trainer/nutritionist.
