NEOMED Executive Education, in partnership with University Hospitals, hosted its first in-person Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt session

On Wednesday, May 1, 2024, NEOMED Executive Education, in partnership with University Hospitals, hosted its first in-person Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt session at UH’s Management Services Center.

The inaugural cohort included 24 UH employees ranging from pharmacists and physicians to data scientists and project managers.

The eight project teams are working on developing Lean processes in healthcare operations with project topics such as improving renal biopsy quality, decreasing lead time in the adult kidney transplant evaluation and sepsis antibiotic administration processes, and of course, patient wait-time reduction.

The day began with a review of UH’s Objective Key Results initiative and their relation to the project charters that have been developing through this LSSYB experience. After some project work time, the cohort began a NEOMED yellow belt course classic— the airplane activity! Divided into two competing paper airplane manufacturing teams, learners simulated push and pull systems before implementing their own process improvement idea following a quick Kaizen burst with their team. During debriefs between each round, learners showed their LSS knowledge gained from the past two months of asynchronous content, as they applied lean concept design to their discussions.

Our day closed with a session dedicated to hands-on process mapping. With the support of both NEOMED and UH LSS Black Belts and Master Black Belts, teams worked collaboratively to map their current state process, identify waste and value through their processes, and brainstorm ideas for their future process state.

One UH Employee shared “Everything has been amazing so far! Super excited for this opportunity!” Another noted “NEOMED was very coordinated and organized with all lessons learned. Very polished, professional, and gave me very practical skills to take with me.”

The Executive Education team is incredibly proud of the hard work put in by our inaugural cohort, and we cannot wait to see how their projects progress through Lean Six Sigma Green Belt for Healthcare Operations cohort, beginning in June 2024.
