NEOMED celebrated the key part of its mission on Thursday, Nov. 10 – the creation of transformational leaders. All members of the NEOMED community take part in this mission – whether it’s designing curriculum, participating in leadership development opportunities or keeping the campus safe and clean, all of us have a role in the creation of transformational leaders.
The event began with a coffee hour as a “thank you” to the NEOMED community. Students, faculty and staff gathered and conversed over coffee, hot chocolate, bagels and other refreshments, as well as picking up some Creating Transformational Leaders swag. Attendees also wrote down how they are helping to create transformational leaders for a display in the atrium outside of Watanakunakorn Auditorium.
Here are a few of the thoughts that were shared in response to the prompt “I am transforming NEOMED by…”
- creating a warm and welcoming campus environment
- helping others realize their dreams, to believe they can reach high
- listening to our students and understanding their experiences
- keeping an open door to assist and problem solve with employees at all levels
- being there for students and helping them navigate their year as easily as possible
Leaders from each of NEOMED’s strategic pillars – people, education, discovery, service and community engagement, growth, administrative and academic support operations – gave updates on the progress of each pillar towards the strategic plan, which was initiated in 2020 and will run through 2025. To see all the progress and metrics reported on the strategic plan visit and explore the Creating Transformational Leaders dashboard.
The activities continued as attendees enjoyed lunch, followed by a special VITALS program that featured Forrest Faison III, M.D., Vice Admiral (ret.), 38th Surgeon General, U.S. Navy. Dr. Faison challenged audience members to really consider what the word “care” means to them – how do you care for others and what type of care can you provide. The event concluded with a Q&A session moderated by Monica Robins, WKYC-TV senior health correspondent, in which members of the NEOMED community were able to gain insight on Dr. Faison’s many years of leadership roles with the U.S. Navy.
