NEOMED students build new campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity
A new student group is picking up hammers and paintbrushes to build something different: a stronger community. The Habitat for Humanity student chapter is dedicated to providing safe and stable homes for families in need.
The inspiration for the chapter came from rising second-year medical student Abdelrahman Boghdady, who experienced the fulfilling work of Habitat for Humanity as an undergraduate at Kent State University. Upon arriving at NEOMED and realizing there wasn't a campus chapter, he took the initiative to establish one. "I'm incredibly grateful to my fellow students who joined early on to help get the chapter off the ground," says Boghdady, "and to our faculty advisor, Dr. [Corrie] Stofcho, whose support has been instrumental in making this a reality."
The NEOMED Habitat for Humanity chapter is currently working on a house in Atwater, Ohio, with an expected completion date by the end of Summer 2025. Students are actively involved in various stages of construction, working under the guidance of a professional construction manager. "Duties vary depending on the stage of construction," explains Boghdady. "Essentially, we help with whatever is needed that day. Tasks can range from framing and painting to landscaping and cleanup."
The experience offers more than just practical skills; it provides a unique sense of purpose. "It’s incredibly fulfilling," he shares. "There’s something very special about directly contributing to your community and knowing your work is part of providing a safe, stable home for a family. We also get to build meaningful connections with the families, with each other and with the broader community. Our vision is to help build a world where everyone has a decent and safe place to live."
Looking ahead, the NEOMED Habitat for Humanity chapter has ambitious goals. They aim to establish a consistent presence in the community through regular volunteering and fundraising events, providing students with hands-on opportunities to contribute to affordable housing initiatives while fostering teamwork, service and social responsibility.
Beyond student engagement, the chapter hopes to involve NEOMED faculty and staff in their efforts. "We hope to involve faculty and staff, whether through volunteering, mentoring or supporting chapter initiatives to build a culture of service that spans the entire NEOMED community," says Boghdady. Long-term aspirations include developing sustainable partnerships with local Habitat affiliates, increasing involvement and potentially participating in national initiatives. Ultimately, their goal is to make a lasting impact both on the community and on the personal and professional development of their members.
