Students engage in health services research
The 2023 Student Research Symposium featured student research projects focused on health services research. Health services research is a multidisciplinary approach to understanding how organizations, social structures, processes, technology, social factors and personal behaviors influence access to and quality of health care, as well as physical and behavioral health outcomes. These students completed research projects working with NEOMED faculty in the Health Services Research Focus Area.

Raman Bhambra, a second-year College of Medicine student, presented her work evaluating simulated patient cases depicting patients with disabilities. Raman is working with Drs. Rachel Bracken and Rebecca Fischbein in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Raman also presented at the North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) conference in San Francisco.

Alyssa Battaglia, Sanaiya Ahmed and Tyler Chinsky (second-year medicine students) and Christina Abd (third-year medicine student) presented their work exploring housing instability and food insecurity as social determinants of health for people with mental illness. This work was supervised by Drs. Natalie Bonfine and Stacey Barrenger in the Department of Psychiatry.

David Ceraolo, a second-year medicine student, worked with Dr. Stacey Barrenger and presented his research that explores mental health services in prison settings.

Erika Ratcliff (second-year medicine student) presented her work on COVID-19 vaccination rates in nursing home settings. This work is part of a collaborative study with Dr. Kris Baughman and Dr. Ruth Ludwick, Department of Family and Community Medicine.
Congratulations to our student researchers exploring aspects of health services research!
