New Project ECHO focuses on alcohol and substance use

Northeast Ohio Medical University is launching a new Ohio Alcohol and Substance Use Project ECHO (Ohio AUD/SUD ECHO) on March 1, 2024. Project ECHO is a learning format to educate, network and share patient cases through an online community of learners to improve patient care throughout the state, country and the world.

The Ohio AUD/SUD ECHO will be presented twice a month on the first and third Fridays from 7-8 a.m. The ECHO offers free continuing education credit for physicians, nurses, counselors, social workers and chemical dependency counselors.

Funding is administered through Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Services and is part of the work that is earmarked through the Community Innovations portion of the state budget to deliver statewide continuing training and education to professionals on the identification and treatment of alcohol and other substance use disorders with medications that are approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration. Medication-assisted Treatment (MAT) has been widely used for opiate-use disorder for decades and has expanded to use for Alcohol Use Disorder in more recent years will much success.

In addition to the new Project ECHO, NEOMED is developing innovative online and in-person trainings to support the growth of MAT practices in primary care and other offices to aid in patient recovery throughout the state.
