New teaching tool that helps students attend to dying patients wins COM innovation award

The College of Medicine (COM) Office of Medical Education is excited to announce Kevin Dieter, M.D., associate clinical professor of Family and Community Medicine, as the most recent faculty recipient of the Education Innovation Award.

Dr. Dieter’s project, “How to Attend to a Dying Patient,” will primarily impact M3 students during their Family Medicine clerkship with subsequent resources provided at the end of students’ M4 year. The overall goal of the project is to provide our medical students with the basic concepts necessary to attend to a dying patient compassionately and effectively through the use of different teaching tools that were co-created with graphic artist David Pfendler.

Applications are now being accepted for the next Education Innovation Award, established to support faculty in developing innovative ways to engage learners. Project proposals should align with the NEOMED COM Educational Program Objectives and support a formal COM curricular component.

All faculty who are currently teaching in the COM curriculum are eligible for the award. The maximum award amount is $5,000 and is limited to one award per module/course and one award per applicant per academic year. The application is due to comfacdev@neomed.edu by July 15, 2023. Awardees will be announced by September 1, 2023.

Details on the application process, requirements and the application form can be found on the Education Innovation Award page on the COM Faculty Development website.
