NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing

In October 2020, the NIH issued four notices about updates to data management and sharing policies.

The applicable policies are NIH-OD-21-013; NOT-OD-21-014; NOT-OD-21-015; and NOT-OD-21-016.

Beginning in January 2023, a data management and sharing plan is required for ALL NIH-funded projects, either in whole or in part, that will result in the generation of scientific data. This does not apply to training grants, infrastructure development or non-research awards.

Data management and sharing practices should be consistent with FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) Principles.

Additional information on data management and sharing can be found on the NIH Scientific Data Sharing Website.

Faculty are highly encouraged to register for a two-part NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy webinar series. The first, “Understanding the New NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy,” to be held Thursday, Aug. 11 from 1:30-3 p.m.

The second, titled, “Diving Deeper into the New NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy," will be from 1:30-3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22.
