Northeast Ohio AHEC Scholars and Future Docs recognized for completing programs
The Northeast Ohio Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Regional Program Office at NEOMED hosted 90 AHEC Scholars and Future Docs students on April 18 for a day of training focused on advocacy in healthcare. The morning featured a dynamic panel that included Kristina Fey, APRN-CNP, a representative from Congressman David Joyce’s (OH-14) office, and Northeast Ohio AHEC center directors. Together, they guided students through the essential levels of advocacy: patient-level, system-level, community advocacy and the critical role of local, state and national health policy.
In the afternoon, the program shifted to a celebration of student achievement, recognizing those completing the AHEC Scholars and Future Docs programs. AHEC Scholars, a national interdisciplinary initiative, provides health professions students with both didactic and community-based training in rural and underserved areas, strengthening patient-centered care and professional development. This year, 36 students completed the program, with at least 10 matriculating to the colleges of NEOMED this summer and fall.
The AHEC Future Docs program, a pre-medical support initiative for undergraduate students—particularly those from rural, underserved, or disadvantaged backgrounds—offers structured guidance, mentorship, and resources to strengthen medical school applications. Ten students completed the year-long program, which included intensive preparation for the application process, interviews, and the MCAT.
The ceremony also included recognition of two Northeast Ohio AHEC Program Office award recipients. The Patricia Hill Commitment to Excellence Award honors individuals whose work demonstrates a deep commitment to healthcare education, community engagement, and the empowerment of others. This year’s recipient is Denise Kropp of the Department of Family and Community Medicine.
The Northeast Ohio AHEC Alumni Advocate Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated distinguished service in advancing the mission of AHEC through advocacy, leadership, and service to vulnerable populations. This year’s recipient is Natasha Salmen, M.D., a recent graduate of the College of Medicine, recognized for her sustained engagement and contributions to AHEC throughout her medical education at NEOMED.
