Outstanding Student Volunteers

In our school community, three students have been making a significant impact beyond our campus. For the past three years, Tarik Whitham, Thomas Sonnanstine, and Jacob Walter have volunteered with United Disability Services (UDS), engaging with athletes through UDS' All-Star Training Club. Through this involvement, they have been able to participate in various integrated sports with members of the disabled community.

While different sports are held during different seasons, Tarik, Tom, and Jacob all brought enthusiasm and joy to these games, providing physical activity opportunities, as well as an exciting level of competition, to those who might otherwise lack access. Their commitment has promoted inclusivity and fostered genuine friendships amongst all participants, which is always evident upon the playful banter and trash talking during the various practices.

United Disability Services praises the trio for their dedication and positive attitude. Upon the resolution of the final week of Soccer this spring, the coordinator noted the magnitude of impact that the volunteers have: "You three really bring the best out of all of the athletes. The degree of progress that they have all made throughout the season is fantastic, and it is undoubtedly assisted by you three involving the athletes during the games and practices."

Through their volunteer work, Tarik, Tom, and Jacob have invested in and further developed their empathy, leadership, and teamwork skills. All three of them look forward to the upcoming seasons and continuing their new friendships!

If any students, faculty, or staff are interested in becoming involved with UDS and the All-Star Training Club, their information can be found online at https://www.udsakron.org/programs-services/all-star-camp/ .
