Perspective from Catherine Domingo: Meet the Virtuous Healer Honor Society
What is the Virtuous Healer Honor Society?
The Virtuous Healer Honor Society (VHHS) at NEOMED is an organization that strives to embody the humanistic side of medicine. Its predecessor was the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS). VHHS highlights the values of altruism, compassion, curiosity, generosity, humility, justice, and moral imagination.
How did you hear about VHHS?
I first learned about VHHS from an article just like this one when I was an M3!
What is your favorite part about being a VHHS member?
What I love most is the sense of shared purpose to care and look out for our community. Working alongside my amazing classmates and faculty who inspire me to be the best version of myself has been rewarding!
How does being a VHHS member help you as a student?
Medicine is demanding, and it’s easy to get caught up in the grind, but VHHS helps me stay grounded by keeping service at the forefront. Something I’ve always enjoyed doing during my time at NEOMED was planning for events for student organizations and interest groups. I absolutely love planning for the sort of events that bring our community closer together- like our Teddy Care Clinic which we held on March 15!
How can students join VHHS?
Membership is by nomination, either from faculty or fellow classmates! Once nominated, there is an application process that gives students the opportunity to share their values and experiences. There are so many individuals at NEOMED who quietly go above and beyond for others, and I encourage you to keep them in mind and nominate them when the time comes. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate their efforts!
