What is the Virtuous Healer Honor Society?
VHHS is a community of students, physicians and faculty who share a commitment to the qualities of a virtuous healer. Members come together to support one another, reflect on their experiences and uphold these values through service to our community.
How did you hear about VHHS?
I first heard about VHHS during my first year of medical school after volunteering at the Teddy Care Clinic. It was a great experience to introduce children to the medical field and help them feel more comfortable visiting the doctor. Learning about VHHS through that experience showed me how the organization brings together service and compassionate patient care.
What is your favorite part about being a VHHS member?
My favorite part of being a VHHS member is being surrounded by individuals who strive to grow personally and professionally. I enjoy that we have the opportunity to choose community service events that align with our interests and passions.
How does being a VHHS member help you as a student?
VHHS gives me opportunities to make an impact within the NEOMED community while reminding me of the responsibility we have to serve our patients and our community. It encourages me to carry the values of a virtuous healer with me throughout my medical education and into my future career.
How can students join VHHS?
Students are first nominated by peers and faculty during their third year of medical school. After nominations close, students will be invited to apply for VHHS. Students will then complete an application detailing their community service, leadership, and research experiences. In addition, students will complete a personal statement highlighting the qualities of a virtuous healer, including altruism, compassion, curiosity, generosity, humility, justice and moral imagination. Feel free to reach out with any questions!
