Perspective from the Virtuous Healer Honor Society: Meet Natasha Salmen
As the nomination cycle for the Virtuous Healer Honor Society comes to a close, current members shared their reflections on being involved in VHHS.
Meet VHHS Student Member Natasha Salmen, M4!
What is the Virtuous Healer Honor Society?
The Virtuous Healer Honor Society (VHHS) is composed of NEOMED students, physicians and faculty who exemplify the core attributes of a virtuous healer: altruism, compassion, curiosity, generosity, humility, justice and moral imagination. Together, we strive to embody these values while serving our communities—whether at the hospital, within NEOMED or beyond—and to carry them forward as we transition into residency and our future careers.
How did you hear about VHHS?
I learned about VHHS from a dear friend and mentor, Vissy Elad [2025 alumna].
What is your favorite part about being a VHHS member?
What I love most about VHHS is the strong sense of community it fosters among students and faculty committed to service. It’s rewarding to collaborate on projects that make a tangible difference both within NEOMED and in the broader community.
How does being a VHHS member help you as a student?
Being a VHHS member reminds me to approach every patient and experience with compassion and humility. It has also strengthened my commitment to serving the community and learning from the people and experiences that shape me as a future physician.
How can students join VHHS?
M3 students are nominated by both their peers and faculty members. Once a student receives enough nominations, they are invited to complete an application that includes an essay describing how they embody the qualities of a virtuous healer, along with a record of their community service activities. Current VHHS members review the essays and service records, and final selections for induction are made by VHHS faculty members.
