Pharmacy Students Meet with Legislators

NEOMED was well represented at the 2023 Ohio Pharmacists Association (OPA) Student Pharmacist Legislative Day with 16 students and three College of Pharmacy administrators attending.

The advocacy event on March 7 gave student pharmacists the opportunity to meet with legislators to educate them about pharmacy-related issues and the value of the pharmacist. The main topics of discussion were test-and-treat legislation, prohibiting white-bagging practices, co-pay accumulation and issues related to increasing dispensing reimbursement.

“This is my third year attending legislative day,” Paige Tulcewicz, fourth-year pharmacy student, said. “I am so thankful for the Ohio Pharmacists Association (OPA) for giving pharmacy students the opportunity to speak with legislators about pharmacy legislature each year. Post-graduation, I will absolutely continue to advocate for the profession of pharmacy.”

Fourth-year pharmacy student Miranda Galleher, concurred, “Legislative Day is an amazing opportunity we have as students to advocate for the profession of pharmacy! We were able to advocate for House Bill 80, which would allow pharmacists to test for and treat flu, strep and COVID. This was my third time attending and I have had a great experience every year!”

The students were accompanied by Jaclyn Boyle, assistant dean, student success, Seth Brownlee, senior associate dean, program quality and student success, and Richard Kasmer, dean.
