Physicians honored on National Doctors’ Day

In recognition of National Doctors’ Day on March 30, the College of Medicine sent out a call for nominations for physicians across the college who go above and beyond. Many NEOMED faculty members were nominated by their peers, colleagues and students for their dedication to improving the health and well-being of patients and communities through the care they provide, the research they conduct and their efforts to teach and inspire learners.

Here's who was recognized along with some words from their nominator:

Susan Nofziger, M.D.

“Dr. Nofziger is a pediatric hospitalist who provides excellent clinical care. She excels in interpersonal communication, is thoughtful, and cares deeply about her patients and colleagues. She has committed her career to the education of others (patients, students, residents and faculty alike) and is dedicated to improving clinical rotations for medical students and creating a strong future in medicine.”

Alex Heintzelman, M.D.

“Dr. Heintzelman is the embodiment of a good doctor. He is honest, compassionate and kind. He takes time to get to know his patients and their families, to really understand their situation and how an illness/condition is impacting quality of life. He establishes an environment that is rich with trust and psychological safety, which is no simple feat in modern health care. He is attentive to physical, mental and emotional health, and understands that these all deserve attention.

“He inspires students to learn more about rural patients and rural medicine, but most importantly, he inspires them to be better physicians by being better people. That’s the thing that makes Dr. Heintzelman such a great doctor – he is a great person first. He doesn’t allow the Physician part of his identity to overshadow his humanity. He is honest about the state of health care in Ohio but chooses advocacy and engagement over cynicism.”

Corrie Stofcho, M.D.

“Dr. Stofcho’s positive attitude is contagious. Her ability to connect with colleagues and students alike, as well as her ability to provide excellent patient care, makes her a valuable asset to NEOMED. It's incredible how well she balances her clinical duties, extracurricular work activities and family life seamlessly. She looks at issues from every angle before making an informed decision. She is never judgmental, gives feedback in the most professional way and always tries to see the best in everyone, all qualities of a great leader.”

Elizabeth Whipkey, M.D.

“Dr. Whipkey is a wonderful physician for her patients. She provides genuine care and a warm demeanor that makes you feel at ease during every visit. She takes the time to listen, explain and involve patients in health care decisions. She consistently delivers compassionate, patient-centered and dedicated care.”

Bradley Moore, M.D.

“Dr. Moore’s contributes to the success of NEOMED students by being a reflective practice leader and teaching residents and medical students at Summa’s internal medicine rotation. Dr. Moore advises students to choose from love not fear, think independently about challenges they will encounter in medicine, and be open and honest in their reflections. He creates a safe space for future doctors to prepare for the mental, emotional and spiritual challenges of a career in medicine, and he does so with high quality patient care at the forefront. He is a leader in his field and a leader to us medical students. He is a person we will remember and emulate.”

Kristine Gulotta, M.D.

“Dr. Gulotta is an advocate for her patients, ensuring they have everything they need for the best medical care possible. She is passionate about teaching residents and students to provide exemplary care.

“She is a great member of the faculty and helps us think through patients’ issues, ensuring patients receive quality care.”

Mariquita Belen, M.D.

“Dr. Belen goes above and beyond for the students at NEOMED. She’s involved in many student organizations and advocates for the under-represented.

“You can see how much Dr. Belen enjoys teaching and helping all students succeed. She is an exceptional educator and compassionate mentor who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Department of Family and Community Medicine.”
