Quarterly Meeting Summary from Women in NEOMED

Happy Women’s History Month! Nine years ago, Women in NEOMED (WiN) was founded by Dr. Rebecca German.

Our vision is that by building community within NEOMED, we will empower women to be leaders in academia, clinical care and research, and we will contribute to a culture of equality and respect in Northeast Ohio.

Today, we are getting stronger with 28 new members. We aptly call this For The WiN or #FtWiN!

ICYMI: Here’s our first quarterly meeting summary held last Feb 28.

  1. Our total membership is 123! We went over a brief history of WiN, including leadership and accomplishments—from lactation rooms to the flexible work hours initiative.
  2. Mid-year elections were announced for staff co-chair (2-year term) and secretary (1-year term). Send Kit, Carli, or Mekal nominations to be included in the upcoming June election.
  3. We discussed the survey responses collected in 2022 –please email us if you would like to see this report.
  4. We reviewed past subcommittee work and we are hoping to reboot some of that momentum -- Social & Comm Outreach/Professional Development/Faculty Mentoring/Ad hoc Advocacy. Email us directly if you are interested.
  5. We discussed possible partnerships with Student Organizations and brainstormed some fantastic new events/ideas to plan for the coming year:
    1. Career closet for students (need space and a call for clothing)
    2. Establishing a book club. For those unable to wait, contact Shelley sharrell@neomed.edu, who runs Whale of a Tale book club.
    3. Continuing the plant swap similar to what occurred last year campus wide. We could do houseplants, and vegetable/herb starts! (The original point person is no longer here. Please reach out if you would like to head up this event but we need a point person to reach out to us by March 31 for an early May swap.)
    4. Organizing a local nature hike -- looking to schedule for later this year.
    5. Putting on a gardening lunch and learn -- possibly collaborating with the existing student garden group. More on this soon.
    6. Need assistance with your strategic funding initiative? Reach out to Rebecca German, who can assist!
    7. Possible mindfulness session/lunch and learn (looking to schedule for later this year)
    8. "Hidden Figures" movie showing event with popcorn, of course! (looking to schedule for later this year)
    9. The NEOMED Journal Club Student Group service project will be held from March 6-15. Reach out to Heather hm2@neomed.edu for information.
