Reference Librarian Published in Annals of Gerontology and Geriatrics

Colleen Duchon, reference librarian at Northeast Ohio Medical University, completed the comprehensive literature search that supported a newly published systematic review in the Annals of Gerontology and Geriatrics. Her expertise in research strategy and database navigation was essential to identifying the six studies that form the foundation of this work.
The article, titled “Advancements in Safe Fall Landing Strategies: An Updated Systematic Review,” synthesizes recent evidence on techniques that help reduce the severity of injuries when falls cannot be avoided. While traditional fall-prevention programs emphasize balance and strength training, this review highlights the emerging role of teaching safe landing methods, such as tuck-and-roll maneuvers and backward fall strategies, that can lower head and hip impact forces. Training programs not only reduced fall severity in controlled settings but also demonstrated skill retention among both older adults and children.
The findings point to the feasibility of incorporating safe-landing techniques into broader fall-prevention programs. With falls representing a leading cause of injury and mortality among older adults, this work underscores the importance of innovative approaches to public health and geriatric care.
