Reverse pitch event ignites innovation through real clinical challenges

On Wednesday, Oct. 16, more than 95 attendees gathered in-person and on Zoom for this year’s highly anticipated Physician Reverse Pitch Event. Hosted by NEOvations Bench to Bedside, the event gave clinicians, scientists and students a platform to spotlight real-world healthcare problems in need of creative solutions.

A diverse group of presenters shared clinical challenges drawn directly from their specialties, including burn surgery, pediatric psychiatry, general surgery, and pediatric nephrology. These were not hypothetical case studies but real pain points that healthcare providers face in practice, many of which lack effective or scalable solutions.

Presenting clinicians and scientists included Dr. John Langell, Dr. Kevin Watson, Dr. Bernhard Fassl, Dr. Deepak Ozhathil, Dr. Michael Moritz, Dr. Fayez Safadi, Dr. Laura Markley and Dr. Alhussain Ojaym. Each brought forward challenges with the hope of sparking student-driven solutions and collaborative progress. Their enthusiasm was palpable, and many expressed genuine excitement to work closely with students beyond the event. The energy in the room reflected a shared commitment to improving patient care through innovation.

Second-year medical student Mustafa Houmsse and first-year student Varun Raja also presented at the event, showcasing projects they have already been developing. Their presentations demonstrated the power of student-led innovation and showed how early-stage ideas can grow into meaningful, solution-driven work. Their commitment to advancing their ideas was evident as they invited peers to join their teams and contribute their skills, whether in research, clinical insight or design.

Beyond the presentations, the Reverse Pitch fostered natural collaboration between attendees. Students engaged presenters with questions, explored new angles, and began building connections that may lead to future research and project development. Events like this provide a rare opportunity to hear directly from those on the front lines of healthcare while also creating a space where students are empowered to take action.

This event is one of several throughout the year designed to bridge the gap between medicine and innovation. If you're curious about what we do, want to see innovation in action, or are looking for ways to get involved, we invite you to join us at a future event. There is no better way to learn than by being part of the conversation.
