Scholarship helps student explore future in managed care pharmacy

Pharmacy student Adil Hasan was one of five outstanding student pharmacists to be awarded an AMCP Ohio-Kentucky Affiliate Scholarship from the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy to attend the group’s annual meeting in Nashville, Tennessee in April.

According to a post from AMCP, “These future leaders in managed care pharmacy were selected for their passion, dedication and commitment to advancing the profession.”

Hasan shared his thoughts on his involvement in AMCP, receiving the scholarship and what he gained from the conference with the Pulse.

In what way has your involvement with AMCP helped shape your path?

I am very grateful for the continued support from AMCP and the Ohio/Kentucky affiliate over the past few years. These opportunities have played a major role in shaping my path toward managed care and industry pharmacy.

My first AMCP conference was last year in Houston, where I was also fortunate to receive a conference scholarship. That experience opened my eyes to the breadth of opportunities within managed care, health economics and outcomes research, and the pharmaceutical industry. Since then, AMCP has continued to provide incredible opportunities that have helped me grow professionally and expand my network.

What other activities or opportunities have been involved in with them?

Through the AMCP Foundation and our Ohio/Kentucky affiliate, I was selected for both the Gilead Shadowing Program in Fall 2024 and the LEO Pharma Shadowing Program in Fall 2025. These multi-day programs focused on leadership development and gave me direct exposure to industry and managed care roles. Being able to interact with professionals across different functions helped me better understand how pharmacists contribute to areas like medical affairs, health economics and outcomes research, and strategy.

I was also honored to receive the Cathy A. Carroll AMCP Foundation Scholarship, which recognized my involvement and aspirations in the field. The scholarship helped offset tuition costs and further motivated me to continue pursuing opportunities within managed care and industry pharmacy.

Through AMCP, I have been able to build meaningful relationships across the profession. Those connections have opened doors to opportunities such as working in pharmacy data analytics with Sparx Analytics alongside Dr. Adam Bernstein at UNC Pharmacy, as well as networking that helped lead to an internship opportunity in San Francisco with Gilead Sciences.

Looking ahead, I am excited to continue building on these experiences through the Pfizer, AMCP Foundation, and VytlOne Managed Care Internship Program this upcoming summer, which will further expand my exposure to managed care and the pharmaceutical industry.

What do you gain from experiences like this? Is managed care pharmacy a career goal?

These experiences have reinforced my goal of pursuing a career where I can combine clinical knowledge with strategy, data and innovation to improve patient access and outcomes. Managed care pharmacy allows pharmacists to play an important role in shaping how therapies are evaluated, accessed and delivered across healthcare systems.

I was very excited to attend the AMCP Annual Meeting in Nashville this year, reconnect with mentors and colleagues, and continue learning from leaders across the field. I also had the opportunity to speak at the Chapter Leadership Academy, which is especially meaningful as someone involved in student leadership.

I hope to continue building connections, sharing ideas and bringing what I learn back to support other students interested in managed care and industry pharmacy.

AMCP has truly been instrumental in helping me explore these pathways, develop as a leader, and connect with a community of professionals who are passionate about advancing the profession.
