Sharing best practices for cardiovascular and diabetes care in Ohio

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. NEOMED has been a partner in the Ohio Cardiovascular and Diabetes Health Collaborative (Cardi-OH) for the past several years. With the mission of improving health outcomes and eliminating health disparities, the seven medical schools of Ohio work together to provide electronic resources (articles, capsules, webinars, podcasts and newsletters) to healthcare professionals across the state to address heart disease.

NEOMED’s team consists of two healthcare providers, L. Austin Fredrickson, M.D., FACP (’14), and Ruth Ludwick, Ph.D. RN-BC, APRN-CNS, FAAN, and two social scientists, Kristin Baughman Ph.D., and Rebecca Fischbein Ph.D. The NEOMED team has focused on healthcare disparities, lifestyle factors, and patient adherence.

Drs. Fredrickson and Baughman have co-authored an article and a shorter capsule on the importance of family support in cardiovascular disease prevention and care. They are currently finishing an article and podcast on the impact of food insecurity.

Dr. Fredrickson is also serving as the clinical coach for East Liverpool City Hospital's Family Medicine Residency Program's quality improvement project focused on improving cardiovascular health for their patients.

Dr. Fischbein has co-authored an article and a shorter capsule describing equitable healthcare for individuals with disabilities. She also has co-authored articles on improving cardiovascular and diabetes care for LGBTQIA+ patients.

Dr. Ludwick recently contributed to a podcast, Using the Teach-Back Method to Improve Patient Understanding. She has been an advocate for patients with low health literacy in many Cardi-OH publications.

These are just a few of the resources provided by Cardi-OH. The three top topics trending on the website currently include talking to patients about cannabis use, sudden cardiac arrests in young athletes, and barriers to continuous glucose monitor use.
