SNMA and SNPhA support community wellness at Black Family Wellness Expo
by Hana Etemadi and Brianna Owairu
NEOMED students from the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) chapter in collaboration with members of the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) participated in the Black Family Wellness Expo on March 21, 2026.
The Black Family Wellness Expo is a community-focused event centered on prevention, education and health equity. Presented by the Kent Area (OH) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, the event was held at the John R. Buchtel Community Learning Center in Akron, Ohio. The expo brought together over 50 exhibitors to provide free health resources and services to local families.
On the behalf of SNMA, student volunteers Jonas St. Fleur, M3, Veronica Neach, M1, Ethan Mardovin, M1, Brianna Owairu, M2, and graduate student Dante Yarbrough supported community engagement efforts throughout the event as they measured blood pressures and provided education on hypertension management. Educational resources emphasize lifestyle changes, medication adherence and routine monitoring. Collectively, the students screened 26 community members who volunteered to have their blood pressure taken. These one-on-one conversations allowed students to connect directly with community members and reinforce practical, preventive care strategies. The initiative was guided by faculty advisors Michael Appleman and Dr. William Demas, whose mentorship continues to support student leadership and community service.
Representing SNPhA at the event were Brittany Lavanty, P1, Christian Arnold, P2, Sagittar Bedele, P2, and Hana Etemadi, P2, with support from faculty advisor Dr. Jaclyn Boyle. The group provided education on the importance of medication adherence, encouraged community members to keep a blood pressure log, and shared information about glucose monitoring and healthy lifestyle habits. Their conversations with attendees focused on helping individuals better understand steps they can take to manage their health and prevent complications.
By participating in events like this, SNMA and SNPhA continue to uphold their respective missions to serve underserved communities while preparing future physicians and pharmacists to lead with cultural awareness, empathy, professionalism and a strong foundation in preventive care. The experience not only benefits the community but also reinforces the critical role of service providers as educators and advocates beyond the clinical setting.
