Stressed out? Anxious? The many ways NEOMED students can access counseling

It's okay to not be okay at NEOMED. And if you are not okay, we're ready to help.

NEOMED has certified, professional counselors who will help you deal with the stressors that can kneecap your best efforts in class, during exam prep or clerkships, or life in general.

Counseling improvements

Student counseling has recently relocated to NEOMED Health Care, located on the second floor of the NEW Center, in the same suite as the Wasson Center.

A new counseling team is on board, offering more in-person appointments than previously, generally from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Walk-ins are welcome, but you are encouraged to make an appointment if at all possible, said Dr. Lisa Tavallali, senior practice administrator at NEOMED Health Care.

Telecounseling/teletherapy is also available for those who cannot easily make it to Rootstown. Please note that we strongly prefer the initial appointment to be in person, with subsequent sessions occurring virtually. However, do not let that hold you back from reaching out; we can make accommodations.

Make an appointment

If you are interested in any of these options, request an appointment with an email to counseling@neomed.edu or a call to 330-325-6757.

After hours and weekends

When immediate attention is needed after 5 p.m. or over weekends, Impact Solutions has counselors available at all hours. During those hours, the 330-325-6757 counseling number forwards to Impact Solutions, where someone will assist you, regardless of the time. You can also use this form to request off-hours counseling. (In an emergency, please call 911 [or 9-911 on a campus phone], reach out to NEOMED police [available 24-7-365] or make use of the national suicide and crisis lifeline by calling or texting 988.)

We suggest you put the 330-325-6757 counseling number in your phone for easy access.

Privacy and confidentiality

Do not allow concerns over privacy or confidentiality to prevent you from seeking assistance.

"Your privacy and confidentially are of utmost importance to us," Tavallali said. "We are bound by law and ethics to keep your information confidential, and we take that responsibility seriously. Beyond that, we take extra steps to ensure that your interactions with us are handled discreetly and with high sensitivity to your needs."

Culturally sensitive care

Our counselors are trained to understand the unique experiences of people from all backgrounds, and they are committed to providing culturally sensitive care.

In addition, we have diverse, certified counselors who can help you with any wellness counseling needs through Minority Behavioral Health Group (brochure). To request an appointment with the health group, ask for a referral from NEOMED Health Care at counseling@neomed.edu or 330-325-6757.

Six free visits per semester

For any option above, the first six visits per each semester will be covered by NEOMED before private insurance is billed. Last year, more than 90% of cases were handled within six visits each semester.

Are you concerned about someone else?

Are you concerned about someone's behavior that might affect their health and safety or the health and safety of someone else on our campus? If so, we encourage you to make a confidential referral to NEOMED's Care Team. The Care Team is a group of professionals with training in early intervention and the provision of support services for those who are experiencing distress or engaging in harmful or disruptive behaviors.
