Student Research Symposium seeks student submissions

The annual Student Research Symposium is scheduled for 1-5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 17 in the NEW Center and Cook Alumni Hall.

The Pulse recently spoke with Raman Bhambra, M2, who serves as co-president of the symposium along with James Raynor, M2, about the event.

Raman BhambraWhat is the Student Research Symposium, and what is its main purpose?

The Student Research Symposium is an opportunity for students to showcase their completed research and get recognized for their work. Additionally, we hope to have this symposium serve as an avenue for students to get exposed to various types of research and connect with different faculty surrounding their interests.

How can students have their research and other scholarly work included in the Student Research Symposium?

We encourage all students to submit their abstracts via the Call for Abstracts Form. Abstracts are due Friday, Sept. 15 by 11:59 p.m. Students from all Colleges at NEOMED are encouraged to apply. This year, students also have the chance to submit an abstract to be considered for publication in the Journal of Medical Sciences at NEOMED.

How many students participated last year and how many are you expecting at this year’s event?

Last year, we had around 105 presentations with 89 posters and 16 oral presentations. We hope to pass this number and have even more posters and oral presentations!

What is your role on the committee?

I serve as co-president along with second-year medicine student James Raynor and the rest of our committee mentioned below. Our main responsibilities are conducting an application process to find Student Clinical Research Specialty Chairs. These individuals can serve as mentors to incoming or current NEOMED students and help connect them with research opportunities.

Most of our duties revolve around planning the research symposium with the support of a faculty committee. Starting in August, we have biweekly meetings as a group and work separately to ensure the symposium runs smoothly. From collecting abstracts, choosing oral presentations and ensuring the logistics of the details involved with planning a symposium, our committee really works together to ensure the process is smooth.

Which students are taking leadership positions for the Student Research Symposium?

The CSCR Board consists of:

Co-President: Raman Bhambra, M2, and James Raynor, M2

Vice President: T.J. Cahill, M2, and Muhammad Farooqui, P2

Treasurer: Hafsa Hassan, M2

Secretary: Sonam Patel, M2

What is something that you are especially excited about for this year’s event?

I am excited to see the whole symposium come together especially after the many hours we have all spent on this. It is great to see students come together from all the different Colleges and present their work on different types of research. I am also looking forward to hearing from our keynote speaker because they always provide insight on the importance of research and really motivate the students!

Submit an abstract for the Student Research Symposium by Sept. 15
