Students sharpen skills at joint injection workshop

Aspiring physicians recently had the opportunity to hone their clinical skills at a specialized joint injection workshop, conducted in collaboration with physicians and residents from Summa Health. The interactive session provided medical students with hands-on practice and expert guidance on a commonly performed procedure across various medical specialties.

The workshop saw enthusiastic participation from students eager to bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and real-world application. They learned the nuances of different joint injection techniques, gaining practical experience that will prove beneficial as they progress in their medical careers.

Greta Wilker, second-year medical student, shared her positive experience, reflecting, "Overall, I wanted to attend the workshop to learn more and practice joint injections. From different PACE [Primary Ambulatory Care Experience], shadowing and seminar experiences, I've seen that joint injections are a technique that is frequently done in a wide variety of specialties, so as I move into rotations next year, I wanted to already have that experience."

She emphasized the practical value of the workshop, stating, "From a technique standpoint, I'll be able to take experience and prior exposure with me into clinicals next year. Considering most of the things we will being doing next year as M3s will be new, it's nice to have already had this practice. The Summa residents that helped us were also able to give us helpful advice about what to expect during our family medicine rotations!”

The workshop offered a welcome chance to translate theoretical knowledge into tangible skills. "The reason that I love attending these events is because it's a great place to put our book work to practice," Wilker explained. "Most of the time in class we are looking at pictures of techniques or anatomy and it’s very theoretical. But when we have opportunities like this, we get the chance to see it in 3D and use our hands, which for me, is the fun part of medicine."

The collaboration with Summa Health provided students with insights from practicing physicians and residents, offering a glimpse into the daily realities of patient care. The mentorship and guidance received during the workshop enhances our students' confidence and preparedness as they embark on their clinical rotations.
