John P. Murphy Symposium in Medical Humanities 

Sponsored by the Program in Medical Humanities,  

Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine  

The John P. Murphy Symposium in Medical Humanities is an opportunity for Ohio medical students, faculty and others who are interested in health humanities to gather, network, share their work, and enhance their skills. Generously funded by a grant from the John P. Murphy Foundation, this symposium is free to all presenters and attendees. It will feature keynote speakers, presentations from students and others, and hands-on workshops in medical and health humanities. Student participation is especially encouraged, as are intergenerational and interdisciplinary presentations. Awards will be presented for the best presentations, voted on by attendees.  

Deadline for proposals: February 22 by 11:59 p.m. EST.

Saturday, April 6, 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. 

Health Education Campus, Cleveland Clinic

We invite proposals from medical students and all who are interested in curricular and co-curricular activities in the medical and health humanities, including but not limited to: 

  • Community engagement and advocacy initiatives 
  • Medical and health humanities/arts projects, such as journal publishing, visual arts, performing arts, graphic medicine, poetry, history, philosophy 
  • The intersection of wellness, disability, and artistic endeavors 
  • Academic medical and health humanities projects (e.g., innovative curricula)  
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion projects  

We welcome a variety of presentation formats, including:  

  • Flash Presentations (Five-minute presentations showcasing arts and humanities curriculum, extracurricular projects, scholarly work, etc.) 
  • Please provide an abstract of 250 words or fewer describing your Flash presentation. 
  • Paper and Project Presentations (15-minute presentations on scholarly work, curriculum, extracurricular activities, etc. Need not be a formal paper.)  
  • Please provide an abstract of 250 words or fewer that describes your paper or project.  
  • Dialogues, Discussions and Debates (25 minutes of dialogue on health or medical humanities/arts group discussion. For example: an idea you have for a project for which you want feedback, a proposal for a novel use of arts and humanities in medical education, or a discussion about student-led initiatives in medical and health humanities and arts.)  
  • In 250 words or fewer, please provide a prompt for discussion. As part of this prompt, please provide a reason that this discussion is valuable for medical students and those engaged in medical and health humanities.  
  • Visual Arts Gallery (Display your visual art in a gallery setting, along with a didactic. Art can take any form, including digital.)
  • Please describe your art in 250 words or fewer and send a photograph of your art to burkek@ccf.org.  
  • Performance (Showcase your performance (5 minutes or less) in spoken word poetry, short story, music, dance, theatre, or performance art during the dessert reception.)  
  • Please describe your performance in 250 words or less. If it is a written piece (e.g. poem, short story) please email your piece to burkek@ccf.org.
