The Sting of Microaggressions

A cartoon mosquito standing next to a human. At a recent NEOMED Diversity Council meeting, co-chair Yoleetah Ilodi, M.D., assistant dean of diversity for the College of Medicine, shared a video on microaggressions that likens these annoying offenses to the stings of a mosquito.

As Dr. Ilodi notes, not all bites are created equal – some are larger or more intense – but the effect is cumulative.

NEOMED’s Diversity Council is composed of a 20-member committee of NEOMED-affiliated individuals, including faculty and staff from offices and departments across the University, as well as first- and second-year students from each College. Faculty and staff members are appointed to their terms, while students are self-nominated or nominated by their peers.

The Diversity Council will have openings beginning in summer 2022. If you are interested in being considered, or if you would like to become involved with diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives at NEOMED in other ways, please contact Andre Burton, VP for Human Resources and Diversity, at aburton@neomed.edu.
