Third-year medical students publish in Annals of Internal Medicine Fresh Look
Third-year medical students Julie Centofanti, Gabriel Mekis and Adeline Whaley discussed the importance of affordable prescription drug costs in the American College of Physicians Annals of Internal Medicine Fresh Look blog. Centofanti, Mekis and Whaley served as advocacy chairs for the Internal Medicine Interest Group as M1 students and appreciated the mentorship and guidance of Austin Fredrickson, M.D., through the writing process.
This opinion piece highlights the importance of procuring these drugs at a lower cost, including Eliquis (apixaban), Jardiance (empagliflozin) and Xarelto (rivaroxaban). The piece aligns with the American College of Physicians, which supports capping prescription drug costs and continuing the Inflation Reduction Act to ensure patients can access these crucial medications.
Julie Centofanti was inspired by her experience volunteering at a high-risk obstetrics clinic, where she worked with patients with uncontrolled diabetes due to their inability to afford insulin. After the Inflation Reduction Act was enacted and insulin prices were capped, these patients were able to afford insulin and reduce their risk of progressing to preeclampsia. It is essential for medical students to become aware of these opportunities for their patients to obtain these essential prescription drugs at a lower cost.
